August Quickies Pattern: Chained Mittens

Knitting season is upon us, although, I think that this year it has not stopped being knitting season. I’ve definitely been spending a lot more time than normal with my stitching, although, for some reason it is taking me a lot longer to get through a project than usual, so maybe more time isn’t always better? Thankfully this month’s quickies project looks like a fairly quick knit and I’ll be more than ready for the winter weather that I know is just around the corner. I bet I can even get a few pairs made up and set aside for gifts and then I won’t be trying to hurry through my knits later on down the road……

Mone Dräger designed this absolutely lovely Chained Mittens with Arroyo, which just happens to be one of my favorite bases ever. The samples are worked in Arco Iris and the color really stands out in this pattern stitch. The mittens come in four sizes: XS, S, M and L, intended to fit a hand circumference of approximately 16.75 (18.5, 20, 21.5) cm [6.5 (7.25, 7.75, 8.5)”].

According to Mone, “The patterns came to life, because I have this fancy for highly variegated yarns, especially the ones by Malabrigo Yarn are always so hard to resist - although I know that I usually love the look in the skein, but I am at loss what to use them for. So when looking for a pattern to showcase the beauty of variegated yarns without the yarn overwhelming the stitch pattern, I found that slipped stitches do the trick. And why not have them swirl all around the project?”

These mittens are knitted from the cuffs to the mitten tops, and each one of the pairs has its own set of instructions that the “chains” slant in the correct direction. The thumb gusset is possibly the most clever construction because it emerges neatly in Stockinette stitch between two of the chains, each mitten can be worn on either hand (picture above with the thumb gusset at the palm of the hand, picture below with the thumb gusset at the back of the hand).
