August Quickies Pattern: Hopscotch Hat

There is a little buzz in the air that back to school is just around the corner (homeschooling family here, so shhh, don’t tell my kiddos because we are always doing school!) and I *think* that also means that cooler days are supposed to be here soon in some parts of the world, but I don’t think Texas got that memo! Whether you are enjoying the last lazy days of summer or trying to get in a quick knit project to prepare for the coming colder days, I think that accessory patterns, especially hats, are key. Our latest Quickies pattern, Hopscotch Hat satisfies the need for a quick, easily portable project, and the sock yarn means that you won’t have a heavy blanket draped at your side while knitting, making it perfect for those whose weather has not quite sorted itself out just yet.

Moira Engel has designed this lovely hat that is knit from the bottom up and in highly textured pattern stitch, resulting in a finished beanie that has just that right amount of slouchiness. This pattern is designed for 5 sizes so the whole family can get in on the fun, and if you start knitting now, you’ll have every head in the house covered before the first leaf falls.

1: What is your favorite part of your Quickies design and why?

Of course the yarn is the star! Also it’s texture.  I love deliberate and defined textures.

2: What should knitters pay attention to when working this pattern? Do you have any tips or tricks that will make knitting this pattern easier?

Twisted stitches can be worked either with or without a cable needle.  The right twist is quite simple but the left twist is a little trickier.  Sometimes using a cable needle for the left twist will provide a smoother look.

3: What do you think knitters will enjoy the most about this project?

The “quick” part is always fun.  It’s a portable, quick engaging project.  The pattern is interesting and not too repetitive.

4: What does your design process look like?

It almost always starts with textures.  Those textures lead to what sort of garments or accessories pieces that they would suit best.

5: Was there any particular inspiration you had when creating this piece?

There’s almost always a hopscotch game chalked on the walk outside my house.  This pattern reminded me so much of that.

6: What is the one thing you wish people knew about you as a designer?

I love helping people through patterns. It’s wonderful when someone reaches out with something that they’re struggling with and you can help them through.

7. What beverage are you most likely to have by your side while designing?

I am all in when it comes to coffee.  It is my magic elixir and joy in my cup!
