December Quickies: Cable Twist Mitts
I’ve got the best gift for you today, a lovely little fingerless mitts pattern that you can knit up and ready for that special someone (even if that someone is you!). This is exactly the type of knitting we all could use about this time of the year, something that is just cozy, and that will knit up like a dream. These mitts take one skein of Sock, or you could give our new Ultimate Sock a try! The flowing cables along the edges of the mitts are what really stand out with this one, and you will want a pair in every color to match all your winter wardrobe needs.
Designer Rachel Wolfe took some time to share with us about these mitts and the design process!
1: What is your favorite part of your Quickies design and why?
The cables running along the side of the hand. They’re elegant and it means you don’t have to check which hand the mitts go on, as both are the same. I also like that the same cables flow into the cuff and the top of the mitts.
2: What should knitters pay attention to when working on this pattern? Do you have any tips or tricks that will make knitting this pattern easier?
The cable cross is a little more involved than it first appears and remembers the two purl stitches that come after the cable cross!
3: What do you think knitters will enjoy the most about this project?
I think it’s a fun, elegant pattern that has enough going on to keep knitters interested, without being complex.
4: What does your design process look like?
It varies. I don’t have a set process I follow every time. Sometimes I start with the yarn, other times with the stitch pattern. I will typically chart the stitch pattern when I begin making the sample,
5: Was there any particular inspiration you had when creating this piece?
With the Cable Twist Mitts, I wanted to complete a matching set of accessories that were classic enough in design to work on anyone.
6: What impact does the color of this project have on you? Did you make design choices based on the color way name?
I’m a big fan of tonal shades because they work with almost any stitch pattern, which is why I like to design with them. Tin Soldier looks beautiful in this pattern and the subtle striping effect adds extra interest to the stockinette portions without overpowering the cables.
7: What is your favorite color in Malabrigo’s catalog?
Dewberry, Impressionist Sky, Cereza… The list goes on.
8: What is the one thing you wish people knew about you as a designer?
I’ve been modifying patterns and making up my own designs for about as long as I’ve been knitting (currently ten years and counting), but I never thought of myself as a designer or that I could publish patterns. It took a local yarn store owner to finally push me into writing up my first design for sale.
9. What beverage are you most likely to have by your side while designing?
Vanilla or caramel coffee in the morning, raspberry tea in the afternoon.
