Meet the KAL Designer: Takako Takiguchi

We eagerly look forward to kicking off our Mechita KAL on March 1! To help spread the excitement, we would like to take this opportunity to introduce you to the designer of the piece, Takako Takiguchi. Originally from Japan, Takako lives in sunny California in the United States. Designing since 2013, Takako has had an impressive catalog of 130 designs.

Takako graciously answered some questions about the KAL designs and what you can expect while knitting this piece.

1: What is your favorite part of your KAL design and why?

I love this design because there are many cable patterns and spiral shawl shapes.

2: What should knitters pay attention to when working on this pattern? Do you have any tips or tricks to make knitting this pattern easier?

The patterns used in each section have the same number of stitches (48), and there is always the same number of rows. This allows you to concentrate on working the pattern used in each section with increases and decreases on the edges only.

3: What do you think knitters will enjoy the most about this project?

They can try different stitches and enjoy seeing the shawl grow like a snake.

4: What types of interaction can participants expect from you during the KAL?

I will answer any questions concerning the pattern.

5: Was there any inspiration you had when creating this piece?

My inspiration came from a long and winding road, so I designed a long shawl that mimics that serpentine shape and added different pattern stitches to add some interesting texture.

6: What motivated you to submit to the Call for KAL submissions?

I love Malabrigo yarns and wanted to try my design skills for the submissions. It was an excellent opportunity to use Malabrigo Mechita for the first time, and it was so cozy and pleasant to work with.

7: What do you wish people knew about you as a designer?

I want many knitters to know about my designs. My designs are fundamental and easy to follow, so they are available for all-level knitters.

8. Is there anything else you want to share about the KAL, design, or work?

This design features two colors of Mechita, making the color combinations limitless! I am looking forward to seeing all the different color combinations.

Also, I would like to see how you wear the finished shawl. I only have two ideas; one is wrapping it randomly, and the other one is folding it in half and wearing it like a short scarf. I look forward to seeing all the creative ways you wear this piece!
