October quickie: Ascent

It’s absolutely unmistakably knitting season now- if the beautiful colors of the leaves didn’t give

it away maybe the distinct crisp chill in the air has you reaching for your favorite cardigan or

shawl? It’s definitely time to start diving into my baskets of favorite handmade accessories to

bring joy into the shorter, but oh so darker days!

Before we hustle on past to days of just sweater knitting, though, there are a few more days to

indulge in Socktober (I too knit socks all year round, so you are in good company if that’s you!

But there is something super awesome about making a pair of socks in October!). I’ve got an

absolute treat for you today- no tricks allowed!- a new sock pattern from sock designer

extraordinaire Ruth Brash! This sweet pair of socks, Ascent is ready to just hop right on to your

needles! Grab your favorite skein of Malabrigo sock and then follow along for all the important

details!

According to Ruth,

Ascent (n.):

1. A climb or walk to the summit of a mountain or hill

2. An upward slope or path

3. A rise to an important position or higher level

As I look at those three definitions, I’m struck by the fact that an ascent can be both a steep path or

climb, but also a “leveling up.” This year has been a climb for many of us – steeper for some than

others – and my hope is that you keep climbing. Keep working, keep pushing, keep climbing to

reach your goals!

These socks are knit from the toe-up. The traveling cable literally ascends the foot, finding itself

in a zig zag pattern, much the same as life, a steady yet unexpected climb. There are ladders on the sides to remind you there is often more than one way to reach your goals. The top of the sock

ends in your reward, a crown., created by a folded picot-bind off.

I cannot wait to get a pair of these off my needles and on my very chilly feet, how about you?
