MFPP: The Rainbow Drops Collection

When the day’s start to get colder and the day’s start to look greyer, what is more perfect than a colorful rainbow? Fiona Munro’s addition to our MFPP program is a bright spot and features the perfect knits for this season. This collection features the gorgeous colors of the rainbow with rain showcased by the tiny colorful raindrop stitches. There are legwarmers, handwarmers, a pullover and a cowl, perfect for all your knitting needs in this season.

Fiona’s grandmother taught her to knit at six years old, and she has been knitter ever since! She grew up on a small island in Canada and currently lives in Scotland. Her designs all feature a modern twist on a classic style.

Fiona shared a little bit about her creation of this collection.

1: What is your favorite part of your collection?

My favourite part of this collection is the way it shows off the variegated yarn with a really simple but fun play on the concept of rain drops of joyful colours of the rainbow.

2:  What should knitters pay attention to when working these patterns? Do you have any tips or tricks that will make knitting this pattern easier?

This is a great fairisle beginner project with the simple fairisle chart with the fairisle worked only for one of every three rows / rounds. Also, for the fairisle rows / rounds no more than two different colours are worked for a row / round. Tip – It is a good idea to keep an eye on making sure the fairisle chart is lined up as it is repeated because it is a simple chart it can be easy to accidently let it shift over by a stitch. It is easy to check though to make sure your ‘rainbow drops’ (contrast colour stitches) line up with the previous rows / rounds below.

3: What do you think knitters will enjoy the most about this project?

I think the most enjoyable part of this design is seeing how the variegated yarn knits up to show off its colours because every skein is a bit different!

4: What does your design process look like?

Usually my design process starts by some sort of inspiration, such as a concept or a yarn. Then I work out from there how best to show off that concept. With this collection I was inspired by the highly variegated beautiful yarn and then combined that with the idea of how the variegated yarn could look like rain drops of rainbow colours. From there I worked through what pieces would really show that off well and decided on including leg warmers, hand warmers, pullover, and a cowl. I make sketches and knit up some swatches for each design. From there it is a process of working out the smaller details of sizing and writing up the patterns for test knitting and tech editing.

5: Was there any particular inspiration you had when creating this piece?

This collection was inspired by the gorgeous colours of the rainbow (shown through the variegated yarn) and the rain as shown by the fairisle detail which looks like rainbow rain drops!

6: What is your favorite color in Malabrigo’s catalog?

There are so many great colours to pick from but if I had to pick one it would be the Camaleon colour because of the beautiful combination of fun colours in it.

7: What is the one thing you wish people knew about you as a designer?

That knitting and designing is a passion of mine that I love to share people.
