Malabrigo quickies: Golden Pine

This year is just breezing by! I cannot believe we are already releasing our June quickies project and I am so excited about this one. If a stunning shawl is in your knitterly dreams, you are not going to want to miss this one, Golden Pine. Sussuro, a shawl….yes dear knitters, this is the stuff dreams are made of I assure you. Golden Pine is designed by Faye Kennington.

Faye Kennington’s vibrant, eye-catching motifs bring a modern twist to traditional knitting techniques. Faye’s creative approach and attention to detail have earned her a dedicated following in the knitting community, where she shares her expertise through pattern design and teaching. She lives and works in “Ukee” on Vancouver Island, BC and you can find her online as “UkeeKnits.”

Faye graciously shared a little bit about her design and her knitting process with us:

1 What is your favorite part of your Quickies design and why?

1-2 skein projects are a fantastic way to try out new yarns without a huge commitment. I'm usually all about wool, but this project let me dive into a new blend. Susurro, a mix of linen, silk, and wool, has a texture that's totally different from what I'm used to. The drape is dreamy, and the silk adds a touch of sheen that makes the whole thing feel extra special. It's like knitting with a little bit of magic.

2: What should knitters pay attention to when working this pattern? Do you have any tips or tricks to make knitting this pattern easier?

This shawl is worked from the top down and then divided into three sections, each separated by striking columns of cables. Once you get into the groove of the main pattern, it's smooth sailing—a perfect travel project. The scalloped border adds that final touch of elegance. My tip? Use stitch markers to keep your place and make the process even more enjoyable.

3: What do you think knitters will enjoy the most about this project?

The starting section of the shawl is where the magic begins, and it's so satisfying to see it all come together. The finished shawl has a unique shape that's super easy to wear draped over your shoulders. Knitters will love how the project keeps things interesting without being overwhelming. It's the perfect mix of challenge and relaxation..

4: What does your design process look like?

The shawl started as a little doodle in my knitting design software. Then came the swatching— lots of it! I played around with how the swatch could turn into a full-fledged project, which meant more doodling and more swatching. Choosing the right yarn was key, taking materials and gauge into account. It's a bit like solving a fun, creative puzzle.

5: Was there any particular inspiration you had when creating this piece?

Two things really inspired me. First, I love big, bold lace openings, and the technique of working 7 stitches into one creates these fantastic, eye-catching holes. Second, I enjoy motifs that can elegantly incorporate increases, like in Golden Pine. The natural beauty of pine cones, with their intricate textures, was a big inspiration for this shawl.

6: What impact does the color of this project have on you? Did you make design choices based on the colorway name?

The silk in Susurro makes Frank Ochre glow like gold—it's almost like wearing a piece of jewelry. Frank Ochre has been a favorite of mine for years; it's my go-to for any Malabrigo project. The color not only highlights the texture but adds a warm, inviting glow that makes the shawl pop.

7: What is the one thing you wish people knew about you as a designer?

My happy place is creating pieces with a rhythm that feels almost meditative. I love expanding my skill set and learning new techniques. This journey of constant learning fuels my design ideas, helping knitters grow their skills through my patterns. Golden Pine is both a soothing and skill-stretching pattern, perfect for anyone looking to enjoy the process while learning something new.
