March Quickies - Crochet! Breeze Fairy

Happy March everyone! I am so thankful that the sun has finally decided to reappear and there is a teasing of Spring in the air, and I am so ready for the warmer days (although I will still have my yarn close-by no matter what the weather decides to do!). Today’s Quickies pattern is the perfect welcome to Spring, Breeze Fairy Kerchief, designed by TheWoolenrose. I’m extremely excited to share a crochet pattern with you all today, and this one has me inspired to dig out my crochet hooks and make something to welcome Spring!

Breeze Fairy Kerchief uses just one skein of Mechita, and the sample piece is worked in Three Little Pigs, which in my opinion, is one of the best pink colorways of all times! TheWoolenRose has delivered the perfect accessory for those sunny, yet slightly breezy days that spring is known for. You can really tell how much this designer loves nature and that this piece embodies a feeling to embraced the slow living lifestyle.

Rose theWoolenRose shared some thoughts about the Breeze Fairy Kerchief and designing in general with me, and I’m please to have the opportunity to share them with you all today.

1: What is your favorite part of your Quickies design and why?

I love every stitch. I like the fact that it is a simple design made by the combination of few easy stitches and a soft, sumptuous yarn. Handcraft and quality together like in the good old times.

2: What should knitters pay attention to when working this pattern? Do you have any tips or tricks that will make knitting this pattern easier?

The secret is to use a small crochet hook. Don't be afraid of working with a 2.5 mm hook and you will have great results! Thanks to the Mechita yarn the texture will come out compact yet extremely soft and airy.

3: What do you think knitters will enjoy the most about this project?

This is a pretty simple project suitable for everybody who want to crochet something easy yet interesting. The granny motif is one of the most well-known crochet stitch and sometimes can be considered a little bit old fashioned. It immediately reminds you of the 70s and you don't always want to dress like in the 70s. But using a small hook size like 2.5 mm and an elegant combination of colours the granny motif finds a new and unexpected way to show off.

At the end of the work, you will use the shrimp stitch which I love because it's like crocheting little, gentle waves. I really love the effect it gives to the whole project.

4: What does your design process look like?

I see something beautiful like a leaf, a book, a face, a landscape, a colour, a thought and I want to create something that will remind me of this feeling of beauty. More concretely when I get inspired I usually make a little bit of research trying to find which stitch can suit the idea I have in mind and which yarn can help me to convey the sensations I want to achieve. I usually go back in time when nature was more listened and people made everything by hand. Books, paintings and costume movies help me a lot. The entire process is slow: I literally enjoy every step.

5: Was there any particular inspiration you had when creating this piece?

Yes, there was. More than one. I've been inspired by The Diaries of Jane Somers by D. Lessing, Japanese minimalism, Edwardian Era, Onegin (the movie by M. Fiennes), an elegant friend of mine, Russian (and French) Fin de siècle fashion.

6: What impact does the color of this project have on you? Did you make design choices based on the color way name?

I've used 1 skein of Three Little Pigs because it's my boy's favourite tale :)

You can work this kerchief all in one colour as I've done or you can use a colour for the body and another for the border or again you can work all the project using one colour and use another one only for the edge made of shrimp stitch.

I think the colour combination is essential to give an elegant twist to your crochet work. What about Pascal and Carnival? Dried orange and Lava? Viola and Cereza? So many choices and this is part of the fun!

7: What is the one thing you wish people knew about you as a designer?

I really believe everyone can make a difference in this world while making things they love. I try always to live in contact with nature and I wish my steps are gentle to this beautiful Earth. That's why for my crochet works I use 100% natural, eco-conscious and plastic free yarns.
