March quickies: Over My Head by Goldberry Knits

Spring is (literally!) right around the corner and today’s Quickies pattern is the perfect welcome to this long-awaited season. This cowl pattern, Over My Head, is the perfect accessory for that lingering bit of chill in the air and the beautiful color is a reminder of all the fresh growth that is ready to emerge across this month.

This pattern is designed by Goldberry Knits. The cowl is a very elegant, yet simple knit that you can finish up in one setting. It is designed in Melabrigo Mecha, so it will knit up quicky, and provide a lovely transition knit as we shift seasons.

Deborah of Goldberry Knits shared a little bit about her design with us.

1: What is your favorite part of your Quickies design and why?

I love the cabled edges. The details are sometimes my favorite part of designing, and that is the case here. They are easy to work but really demand attention when the cowl is worn.

2: What should knitters pay attention to when working this pattern? Do you have any tips or tricks that will make knitting this pattern easier?

As always, with the grafting part, take your time and trust the pattern. Kitchener Stitch can be intimidating even in stockinette, so I really put in the work on my end to make that part something you won’t have to have a PhD in Knitology to do. My hope is that knitting this project will inspire confidence so knitters can tackle grafting in any way it is presented to them. That’s not to say these instructions will work for any kind of grafting, just that this pattern is a great place to start building that skill set.

3: What do you think knitters will enjoy the most about this project?

This really is a quickie and a fun knit. The cables are easy but staggered a bit, so they are just enough to keep your attention. I enjoyed knitting and designing it for that reason. I get bored easily, but I never want to work too hard at something that is supposed to be fun. This strikes that balance.

4: Was there any particular inspiration you had when creating this piece?

This one started with that cabled edging. I wanted that particular element and I wanted kind of a clean look. I like a lot of texture, but I wanted this one to be simple with one or two elements that really pop.

5: What impact does the color of this project have on you? Did you make design choices based on the color way name?

Oh, I love it so much! No joke, I was shopping with my daughter once and she snatched a green blouse out of my hands – I’m out of control with my love of that color.

The Chircas colorway really does take the design to a new level. The color is so rich but with subtle variegation. The color didn’t inspire the design but did inspire some of the pics. Spring hasn’t quite gotten here, but I found a place with some green mossy rocks that really work well as a backdrop for the gorgeous color of the cowl.

6: What is the one thing you wish people knew about you as a designer?

That I put a lot of myself into my designs, so it really means a lot to me when people support my work. Also, I am possibly the most approachable person in the world, so they should feel free to reach out if they have questions about this or any of my patterns.

7. What beverage are you most likely to have by your side while designing?

Coffee. I change up how I take it, but it is always coffee.
