September quickie: Statement Cable Scarf

September means the first of the “Brrr months for me now that I live in Ohio. While I am not a fan of the cold that comes along with the ‘brr months (I’m still an Arizona girl at heart!), I am excited about pulling out the cozy fall knits, cuddling under my favorite blanket, and knitting away into the night in front of my fire with a spicy chai latte by my side. Our September Quickies pattern would be a great choice for some cozy knitting and in no time at all, you will have a lovely scarf!

This quickie is designed by Sarah Dawn of Sarah Dawn Designs. It is knit up in two skeins of Malabrigo Mecha, and is shown in English Rose.

The scarf is knit flat and features a cable pattern that is perfect for a newer knitter to explore cables. Pattern is charted and written.

Sarah was able to answer some questions about this new design for us:

1: What is your favorite part of your Quickies design and why?

Oooh, that’s a hard one -- I’d have to say, the speed at which this knits up. You can finish this scarf in a few days, if you have to! (Very close second place is how squishy and warm it is!)

2: What should knitters pay attention to when working this pattern? Do you have any tips or tricks that will make knitting this pattern easier?

When you’re working the Right Purl Cross stitch, please, don’t be afraid to use a second cable needle. It will make things -so- much easier!

Also, slipping the stitches at the edge is optional. If you’d rather have just the plain garter stitch edges, go right ahead!

3: What do you think knitters will enjoy the most about this project?

I hope that knitters will enjoy the fact that the cable pattern is relatively easy to remember, so once you get it in your head, you don’t need to refer to the charts. (Also, the pattern is fully written and charted, so, if you can’t read charts, no worries, I’ve got full written instructions for you!).

4: What does your design process look like?

Usually, I fall in love with a particular stitch pattern. Then I play with it in different yarns and tweak it to different garments and accessories until I get something I love!

5: Was there any particular inspiration you had when creating this piece?

I started with the cable pattern and wondered what to do with it.   When I hit upon the idea of showcasing the cable as one big statement cable, the rest of the scarf came together very quickly!

6: What is the one thing you wish people knew about you as a designer?

Hmmm. . . .  I guess what I want folks to know is that when I say ‘you can knit or crochet’, I really, honestly, actually mean it!   I think absolutely everyone has the ability to craft, it’s all about finding tools and techniques that work for you!   I have a background in disability rights and universal design,  so I can help people find alternate tools and supplies to help them craft (and if I don’t know a good tool for you,  I probably know people I can ask!)

7: What beverage are you most likely to have by your side while designing?

It’s about an even split between Earl Grey Tea (with milk and honey, please!), or Fair Trade Coffee with milk and a dash of maple syrup.
