Malabrigo Quickies: Gale Force Cowl
It is that time of the year when quick, easy, giftable projects are in demand, and designer Karen Bourquin makes a timely delivery with “Gale Force Cowl”. This knit is worked flat with straight needles or worked flat with one circular needle. The easy-to-work Purl Flat Braid Cable is framed by three rows of Fisherman’s Rib, above and below. The cowl is finished top and bottom with a crisp slip stitch edging. Mattress stitch is worked to seam and complete the single loop cowl. It showcases two strands of Rios held together which results in a Bulky yarn that makes the knitting fast.
The designer, Karen lives in a small seaside city on beautiful Vancouver Island, Canada. Inspired by the natural beauty of the Island, it is a perfect place to knit and design everyday. Her designs have been published in magazines, on-line, and in books including; Ravelry, Noro, Interweave Knits, Knitscene, knotions and more.
We are so pleased to be able to share some behind the scenes for Karen’s design!
1: What is your favorite part of your Quickies design and why?
My favorite part of this cozy design is the combination of the Rios yarn with the Cable and Fisherman’s Ribbing- the stitches are so distinct and the yarn is soft and skin friendly! It is a fast and satisfying knit to keep or give to a loved one.
2: What should knitters pay attention to when working this pattern? Do you have any tips or tricks that will make knitting this pattern easier?
Tips:
*Right side rows (rs) are even numbered.
*The Fisherman’s Ribbing (k1b) worked only on the right side rows.
*Two strands of yarn are held together and worked for the whole cowl.
* Each row begins with a slip 1 purlwise to provide a crisp edge on bottom and top.
*Use stitch markers to define each section of the stitch patterns for ease of knitting.
*Swatch first! Adjust the knitting needle(s) to the gauge as needed to get the accurate size.
3: What do you think knitters will enjoy the most about this project?
I hope that Knitters will enjoy working the interesting center cable and will be surprised as how easy the pattern is to work.
Also, the Malabrigo Rios makes the stitches pop and has such a beautiful soft hand
4: Was there any particular inspiration you had when creating this piece?
My goal was to create a cozy Cowl that would stand up to foul weather, be soft and be the first thing I would reach for when heading outside! It will be my go- to during this cold season.
5: What impact does the color of this project have on you? Did you make design choices based on the color way name?
My goal was to create a cozy Cowl that would stand up to foul weather, be soft and be the first thing I would reach for when heading outside! It will be my go- to during this cold season.
The three colors: Ravelry Red, Cerise and Natural all work so well for this design.
Each of the Reds are perfect for this time of year to celebrate the Holiday Season and were a definite inspiration. The Natural color is a beautiful neutral that will go with everything!
6: What is the one thing you wish people knew about you as a designer?
I love to knit and design knitwear. It is such a portable art form that travels with me everywhere and is a constant companion and inspiration. Every project is an opportunity to learn something new and in the end, you have a wonderful, knitted item to share or wear!
7. What beverage are you most likely to have by your side while designing?
